Monday, September 29, 2003

We gathered Sunday morning for worship again. Thanks to Carmen R. and Bethany B. for the great B-fast!

On Oct. 11 we are planning our first Formation Seminar. The Topic will be "What Is Anglicanism?" We will look at what it means to be a sacramental Christian rooted in the Ancient Church and how Anglicanism is an expression of this way of following Christ.

Time: 9:00am - Noon
Schedule:
Session I: Understanding The Ancient Church
Session II: Anglicanism - Intentionally Rooted in the Ancient Church
Session III: Being Anglican in the 21st Century

This is open to everyone who is part of Saint Pats and anyone else who might be interested. More details later.

It was great to be with everyone at this Sunday's worship gathering!

Be sure and pray for Andy Campbell and Audrey Wagner - they travel this week.

This coming Sunday the teaching is "On Mission With God...a missional commuinity is a Kingdom community." We will take a look at the idea of the Kingdom of God and how that shapes the life of a church.

Pray for me as I study this week.

Kyle Schroeder and I (Peter) are attending a Renovare Conference in Louisville tonight and tomorrow. The conference is about spiritual formation and how that ties into the Kingdom of God. Please pray that it will be helpful for us and for Saint Pats.

I just read The Illumined Heart by Frederica Mathewes-Green. As the subtitle states it is a short (102 small pages) outline of the ancient Christian path of transformation. She gives a very accessable presentation of how the patristic church (say first 5 - 7 centuries) understood spiritual formation.

Mathewes - Green is the wife of a former Episcopal turned Orthodox priest. She is chatty, witty and clever writer in the tradition of Erma Bombeck. The book is both helpful and enjoyable. Check out Frederica's website frederica.com. If your curiosity is peeked, take a look at the book at Amazon.com.

John 10:37,38 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.

I have been thinking about this passage. I am wondering what the "works of the Father" are, and how this focus in Jesus life and ministry freed from a lot of distractions. I am also wondering how I/you/we might apply this in our own setting.

Any thoughts?

Saint Patrick's Church held its first worship gathering today (September 7, 2003). We had an informal service using the Morning Prayer service from the Book of Common Prayer. We gathered at 10AM for a light brunch and then worshipped from 10:30-11:30. From 11:30 - Noonish we hung out, chatted and ate more food.

Thanks to Kimberly Wade for a great brunch.
Thanks to Trudi Matthews for leading our Children's Church
Thanks to Keith Barker for shooting photos for posterity.
Thanks to Kyle Schroeder for putting together a photo collage of the retreat.

Prayer request from Lester
I'm to do a consultation and lead a workshop on contemporary worship in Winchester, Virginia in a week. I would appreciate your intercessions that what takes place would strengthen Christ's church for the glory of His Father and the benefit of His disciples.
Thanks, Lester
